Pharmacological properties

A drug used for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Finasteride is a synthetic 4-azosteroid compound, a specific inhibitor of 5-α-reductase, an intracellular enzyme of the prostate that converts testosterone into a more active androgen, dihydrotestosterone. Finasteride reduces the content of this hormone in the blood and prostate tissue within 24 hours after oral administration. It inhibits the stimulating effect of testosterone on the growth of prostate tissue. Treatment with the drug allows for a 51% reduction in the total number of urological symptoms caused by BPH, achieving a sustained reduction in prostate volume, increasing the maximum urine flow rate, and improving clinical symptoms. It does not reduce the level of testosterone in the blood, which provides libido and sexual activity. With constant use, a statistically significant therapeutic effect is observed after 3 months. The severity of the therapeutic effect of the drug is maximum when the prostate volume is more than 55 cm3.

Indication

BPH.

Application

Internally, without chewing, regardless of meals, 1 tablet (5 mg) per day for 6 months or more.

Contraindication

Hypersensitivity, obstructive uropathy, prostate cancer. The drug is not indicated for women and children.

Side effects

The drug is well tolerated. In rare cases, sexual dysfunction and changes in ejaculate volume, impotence, breast enlargement and tenderness, hypersensitivity reactions, including lip swelling, are possible. The frequency of sexual dysfunction decreases during treatment.

Special instructions

Women of reproductive age and pregnant women should avoid contact with crushed or broken tablets due to the potential risk to the male fetus (impaired development of the genital organs). With a large volume of residual urine and / or a sharply reduced urine outflow, the patient should be under the supervision of a doctor, as the development of severe urination disorders is possible.

The effectiveness of the drug in prostate cancer has not been established, therefore, before starting and periodically during treatment, it is necessary to conduct studies to exclude its presence.

Interactions

Currently, no clinically significant interactions of the drug with other drugs have been identified.

Overdose

Not described. No side effects were observed with a single dose of the drug up to 400 mg and multiple doses up to 80 mg/day for 3 months.
