General characteristics
Baicalis is an additional source of alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, harmolol), flavonoids (chrysin, baicalin, baicalein, wogonin) and other biologically active substances contained in extracts of the medicinal plants passionflower incarnate and skullcap.
The main active components that determine the biological effects of passionflower are alkaloids (harmine, harmaline, harmolol), which inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase, causing an increase in the content of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine in the synaptic cleft and improving the transport of mediators between the endings of neurons (nerve cells). Due to this, the extract of passionflower has pronounced antidepressant properties. The most biologically active flavonoid of passionflower is considered to be chrysin, which is a partial agonist of benzodiazepine receptors and exhibits sedative (calming), anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and mild hypnotic effects.
The extract of the skullcap has pronounced adaptogenic properties, i.e. increases the body's resistance to adverse external factors. In addition, the active substances of the skullcap extract - baicalin and wogonin - have an antidepressant and anxiolytic effect, and also have hypotensive and anticonvulsant properties. In terms of sedative effect, the skullcap surpasses motherwort and valerian, but, at the same time, does not have a hypnotic effect.
