Castor oil is a viscous oily liquid obtained from the castor plant (Ricinus communis). It is a complex of triglycerides of ricinoleic, linoleic and oleic acids. When taken orally, it is hydrolyzed by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid, which irritates intestinal receptors and reflexively increases peristalsis. The laxative effect usually occurs after 5-6 hours. The oil is recommended for constipation, poisoning, food intoxication, and also for cleansing the intestines before diagnostic procedures.
