Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics.
Corvalol® K is a sedative and antispasmodic, the effect of which as a complex drug is determined by the components that make up its composition.
Ethyl ester of α-bromosovaleric acid exhibits a reflex sedative and antispasmodic effect, caused by irritation mainly of receptors of the oral cavity and nasopharynx, a decrease in reflex excitability in the central nervous system, an increase in inhibition in neurons of the cortex and subcortical structures of the brain, as well as a decrease in the activity of central vasomotor centers and a direct local antispasmodic effect on vascular smooth muscle.
Validol or a solution of menthol in menthyl ester of isovaleric acid has a sedative and moderate coronary dilating effect due to its effect on the sensitive nerve receptors of the oral mucosa.
Peppermint oil contains essential oils, approximately 50% menthol and 4-9% menthol esters. They are able to irritate the "cold" receptors of the oral cavity and reflexively dilate the vessels of the heart and brain, causing a calming and mild choleretic effect. Peppermint oil has antiseptic, antispasmodic effects, and the ability to eliminate flatulence. Irritating the receptors of the gastric and intestinal mucosa, it enhances intestinal peristalsis.
Hop oil has a reflex vasodilator and antispasmodic effect, eliminates the phenomena of flatulence.
Pharmacokinetics.
When taken under the tongue, the absorption of the drug begins already from the oral mucosa. The effect develops after 5 minutes and lasts for 3–6 hours.
