The bones in the joints are covered with a layer of cartilage, which performs a dual function: it cushions and facilitates the sliding of the articular surfaces during movement. Articular cartilage consists of a network of collagen fibers. The structure of cartilage contains cells - chondrocytes, which are constantly renewed.
