Composition

active ingredient: dry extract from ivy leaves (Hedera helix L. folium);

100 ml of syrup contains 154 mg of dry extract from ivy leaves (Hedera helix L. folium) (4–8:1), extractant: ethanol 30% (m/m);

Excipients: potassium sorbate, hydroxyethyl cellulose, blackcurrant flavoring, liquid maltitol, anhydrous citric acid, purified water.

Dosage form

Syrup.

Main physicochemical properties: brownish-yellow, slightly cloudy solution with a characteristic smell of currants.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics.

"Dr. Theiss's Cough Syrup with Ivy Extract" is a herbal preparation containing glycoside saponins that provide antitussive, expectorant, antispasmodic and antimicrobial effects. Reduces the viscosity of sputum, facilitates its discharge. The mechanism of action is unknown.

Pharmacokinetics.

Pharmacokinetic studies have not been conducted.

Indication

It is used as an expectorant for productive coughs.

Contraindication

Increased individual sensitivity to the active substance, plants of the Araliaceae family or any of the excipients.

Children under 2 years of age (due to the general risk of worsening respiratory symptoms when taking secretolytic drugs).

Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions

There have been no reports that "Dr. Theiss Cough Syrup with Ivy Extract" affects the effectiveness of other medications. No interaction studies have been conducted.

Application features

Prolonged or recurrent cough in children aged 2 to 4 years requires medical diagnosis before treatment.

If shortness of breath, fever, or purulent sputum occurs, you should seek medical advice.

Concomitant use of opiate cough suppressants such as codeine or dextromethorphan is not recommended without medical advice.

Caution is recommended for patients with gastritis or stomach ulcers.

"Dr. Theiss cough syrup with ivy extract" contains liquid maltitol. Adults and children over 12 years of age should take 15 ml 3 times a day (corresponding to a daily dose of 69.30 mg of dry ivy leaf extract); children aged 6 to 12 years - 15 ml 2 times a day (corresponding to a daily dose of 46.20 mg of dry ivy leaf extract); children aged 2 to 6 years - 10 ml 2 times a day (corresponding to a daily dose of 30.80 mg of dry ivy leaf extract).

For correct dosage, use a measuring cup.

Due to the lack of data on patients with renal and/or hepatic insufficiency, dosage recommendations are not possible. It is necessary to consult a doctor before taking "Dr. Theiss Cough Syrup with Ivy Extract".

"Dr. Theiss Cough Syrup with Ivy Extract" should be taken undiluted, regardless of meals. It is recommended to drink plenty of water or warm, caffeine-free drinks during the day while taking it.

Duration of use: If symptoms persist for longer than one week of using this medication, you should seek medical advice.

Children

Do not use in children under 2 years of age.

Overdose

Taking doses exceeding the recommended dose may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or anxiety. Treatment is symptomatic. One case of accidental ingestion of 1.8 g of ivy leaves (corresponding to 195 ml of Dr. Theiss Cough Syrup with Ivy Extract) by a 4-year-old child has been reported, followed by aggression and diarrhea.

Side effects

Gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) have been reported. The frequency of these reactions is unknown.

Allergic reactions (urticaria, skin rash, dyspnoea, anaphylactic reaction) have been reported. Frequency unknown.
