Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
Benzalkonium chloride is a surface-active cationic substance, the contraceptive properties of which are associated with the ability to destroy sperm membranes. After contact of benzalkonium chloride with sperm, their immediate immobilization occurs, and subsequently - the destruction of their cell membrane and the separation of flagella from the heads. The contraceptive effect of the drug Erotex is also realized due to the thickening of cervical mucus and the formation of a film, which reduces the ability of sperm to penetrate through the external os of the cervix.
Contraceptive effectiveness is measured by the Pearl index, for benzalkonium chloride in suppository form it is less than 1, i.e., if used correctly and all requirements are met, the incidence of unwanted pregnancy is approximately 1% per year.
The drug does not affect libido and fertility, and has a reversible effect upon discontinuation.
Erotex also has antiseptic and antimicrobial effects and reduces the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, but does not completely eliminate it.
Pharmacokinetics
The drug is not absorbed by the vaginal mucosa, but only absorbed on its walls, is easily removed by douching with clean water or removed with physiological vaginal discharge, acts only locally and does not enter the systemic circulation. The duration of local action of Erotex is 4 hours.
Indication
Local contraception for all women of reproductive age. The drug is used both independently and in combination with other methods, which enhances their contraceptive effect. The use of Erotex is especially advisable in cases where the advantages of local contraception are undeniable:
in the presence of permanent or temporary contraindications to oral contraception or intrauterine device (after childbirth, during breastfeeding, after abortion, during menopause);
if episodic pregnancy prevention is necessary (irregular sexual life);
when using oral contraception, if the woman forgot or was late in taking the pill (in this case, Erotex should be additionally used on any day of the cycle);
as an adjunct to barrier contraception (vaginal diaphragm) or the presence of an intrauterine device, especially with the simultaneous use of certain medications (e.g., nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, vaginitis, ulcers and irritation of the mucous membrane of the vagina and cervix. Inability to correctly use vaginal suppositories by persons with mental disorders and persons who do not tolerate any interventions on the genitals, or who are unable to understand and agree to this type of contraception.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions
When using Erotex, it is not recommended to use other vaginal forms of medications to avoid the possibility of their interaction and reduced contraceptive effect.
Soap and other soap-based hygiene products inactivate benzalkonium chloride, leading to a loss of its contraceptive effect.
Chemically incompatible with iodine preparations.
Application features
The contraceptive effectiveness of Erotex largely depends on careful adherence to the rules for using the drug!
To achieve maximum effect, you should remember these rules and follow them:
the drug must be used before each sexual intercourse, regardless of the phase of the menstrual cycle (using the drug only on “dangerous days” reduces the effectiveness of the method);
in case of repeated sexual intercourse, another Erotex suppository must be inserted (one suppository per sexual intercourse!);
For genital hygiene, it is forbidden to use soap or other soap-based products for 2 hours before and 2 hours after sexual intercourse, because even small amounts of them destroy the active ingredient of Erotex. Only clean water should be used!
Do not douche the vagina for 2 hours after intercourse.
You should not use Erotex without a doctor's permission if you have any vaginal diseases.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
The drug is a contraceptive and should not be used during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs while using benzalkonium chloride contraception, no effect on the course of pregnancy has been detected.
Benzalkonium does not penetrate into breast milk, so Erotex can be used during breastfeeding.
Ability to influence reaction speed when driving vehicles or other mechanisms
Does not affect.
