Pharmacological properties
Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic agent that acts on α-adrenergic receptors.
The drug causes constriction of nasal blood vessels, reducing swelling of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses, thereby improving nasal breathing in case of nasal and paranasal sinus congestion.
The effect of the drug begins a few minutes after application and lasts up to 12 hours.
When applied topically, the drug is practically not absorbed, the concentration of xylometazoline in blood plasma is so low that it cannot be determined using modern analytical methods.
Indication
Symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion in colds, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis. to facilitate the outflow of secretions in diseases of the paranasal sinuses. as an adjunct therapy in cases of otitis media (to eliminate swelling of the mucous membrane). to facilitate rhinoscopy.
Application
Before administering the drug, the nasal cavity should be thoroughly cleaned.
Evkabal drops and Evkabal spray. Adults and children over 12 years of age 2-3 drops or 1 spray into each nostril 2-3 times a day. The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 10 consecutive days.
Eucabal drops for children. Children aged 2-5 years should use the drug under adult supervision, 1-2 drops in each nostril 1-2 times a day.
Children aged 6-11 years should use the drug under adult supervision, 2-4 drops in each nostril 2-3 times a day.
Should not be used more than 3 times a day.
The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 7 consecutive days.
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug, dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa (dry rhinitis), acute coronary disease, hyperthyroidism, angle-closure glaucoma, transsphenoidal hypophysectomy and surgical interventions with exposure of the meninges in history. Concomitant treatment with MAO inhibitors and within 2 weeks after discontinuation of their use.
Side effects
Immune system disorders: hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema, rash, itching.
From the nervous system: headache.
On the part of the organ of vision: transient visual impairment.
Cardiac: irregular or rapid heartbeat.
Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders: dryness or discomfort of the nasal mucosa, burning sensation.
Gastrointestinal: nausea.
General disorders and administration site conditions: burning sensation at the application site.
Special instructions
The drug Eucabal drops and Eucabal spray are not used in children under 12 years of age; Eucabal drops for children - are not used in children under 2 years of age, use in children aged 2-11 years is recommended only under adult supervision. The drug should not be used for longer than 7-10 days in a row. Long-term treatment with the drug may cause the opposite effect. The drug should be prescribed with caution to patients who have severe reactions to the use of adrenergic drugs, which manifest themselves in the form of insomnia, dizziness, tremor, arrhythmia, increased heart rate.
The recommended dose of the drug should not be exceeded, especially when treating children and the elderly.
The drug should be prescribed with caution to patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, and difficulty urinating.
Each package of drops/spray can only be used by one person to avoid infection.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The drug should not be used during pregnancy due to its vasoconstrictor effect.
There is no evidence of adverse effects in breastfed infants. It is not known whether xylometazoline passes into breast milk, so caution should be exercised in breastfeeding women. The drug can be used only when the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the child, on the recommendation of a doctor.
Fertility: There are no adequate data on the effect of the drug on fertility. Since systemic exposure to the hydrochloride is very low, the likelihood of an effect on fertility is extremely low.
Children. The drug Evkabal drops and Evkabal spray should not be used to treat children under 12 years of age.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving vehicles or working with other mechanisms. Usually the drug has no or minimal effect on the ability to drive vehicles or work with complex mechanisms.
Interactions
Xylometazoline may interfere with the action of some antihypertensive agents, such as β-adrenergic blockers, and some antidepressants, such as tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants.
Overdose
Significant overdose or accidental oral administration of the drug, especially in children, can cause hypoactivity, visual disturbances, headache, agitation, cardiac arrhythmias, insomnia, respiratory depression, sometimes loss of consciousness. Prolonged use of the drug can lead to secondary rhinitis, resistant to treatment.
Treatment is symptomatic.
At a temperature not exceeding 25 °C, the drug is suitable for use for 6 months after opening the bottle.
