Pharmacological properties

Glucose is involved in carbohydrate metabolism. The drug is well absorbed in the digestive tract, distributed with the bloodstream to all organs and tissues; the products of its metabolism are excreted in the urine.

Indication

Used during a glucose tolerance test when the blood glucose level does not allow a diagnosis of impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes mellitus.

Contraindication

Increased individual sensitivity.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions

Application features

The glucose tolerance test should be performed on the patient in a calm state; it should not be preceded by stressful situations or inadequate exercise.

During the examination, the patient should sit (or lie) quietly; smoking and physical activity are not allowed.

The test is not recommended after debilitating illnesses, surgeries and childbirth, with inflammatory processes, infectious diseases, fever, alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, hepatitis, during menstruation, with diseases of the digestive tract with impaired glucose absorption, and malignant diseases.

On the eve and on the day of the study, it is necessary to cancel the intake of medications (adrenaline, glucocorticoids, caffeine, diuretics, morphine, thiazide diuretics, diphenin, psychotropic drugs and antidepressants), as well as medical procedures that may affect blood glucose levels.

False-positive results are observed in hypokalemia, liver dysfunction, and endocrinopathies.

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding

Conducting a glucose tolerance test during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not contraindicated.

Ability to influence reaction speed when driving vehicles or other mechanisms

No effect.

Method of administration and doses

Subjects should follow a normal diet (with a carbohydrate content of at least 150–200 g per day) and exercise for at least 3 days before the test. The first sample is taken in the morning on an empty stomach, after an overnight fast of 10–14 hours (drinking water is allowed).

After the first blood draw from a finger, the subject takes 75 g of glucose dissolved in 250–500 ml of water over 2–5 minutes. To improve the taste of the solution (and prevent nausea in some individuals), lemon juice or citric acid can be added.

When testing overweight individuals, glucose is given at the rate of 1 g per 1 kg of body weight, but not more than 100 g.

For children, the amount of glucose is 1.75 g per 1 kg of body weight, but not more than 75 g.

After 2 hours, the blood glucose level is determined.

For venous blood, the threshold values will be approximately 1 mmol/L (18 mg/dL) lower.

Overdose

With a single use of a large amount of the drug, digestive disorders (nausea, bloating, diarrhea) are possible. Symptomatic therapy is recommended.
