Pharmacological properties
Folic acid (vitamin B9) plays an important role in the synthesis of nucleic acids and the conversion of essential amino acids. Taking folic acid before conception and early in pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects in newborns.
The need for folic acid salts increases especially during pregnancy due to embryogenesis and rapid fetal growth.
A deficiency of folic acid reduces the synthesis of DNA, which is necessary for cell division, as well as the synthesis of some proteins and lipids. In early pregnancy, this disorder can cause neural tube defects in the newborn. Low levels of folic acid in the blood have been found in women who have given birth to children with neural tube defects.
The daily requirement of folic acid (folate) for children is: for children aged 12-13 years – 300 mcg/day, for children aged 14-17 years and adults 400 mcg/day, for women during pregnancy – 600 mcg/day, for mothers who are breastfeeding (1-12 months) – 500 mcg/day (Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 03.09.2017 No. 1073)
Iodine (in the form of potassium iodide) contributes to the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, is a part of its hormones (thyroxine, triiodothyronine). Prevents the development of endemic goiter, cretinism. When iodides enter the cells of the thyroid follicle epithelium, under the influence of the enzyme iodide peroxidase, iodine is oxidized to form elemental iodine, which is incorporated into the tyrosine molecule. At the same time, one part of the tyrosine radicals in thyroglobulin is iodinated. Iodinated tyrosine radicals condense into thyrotrons, the main of which are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The formed complex of thyronine and thyroglobulin is secreted as a deposited form of thyroid hormone into the colloid of the follicle and remains in this state for several days or weeks. With iodine deficiency, this process is disrupted. Potassium iodide compensates for its deficiency, helps restore the impaired synthesis of thyroid hormones. Important properties of potassium iodide include its ability to prevent the accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland and provide its protection from radiation.
The daily requirement of iodine for children is: for children aged 12 years and older and adults - 150 mcg/day, for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding mothers (1-12 months) - 350 mcg/day (Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated 03.09.2017 No. 1073)
