Lactofem vaginal suppositories with lactic acid include a combination of lactic acid and sodium lactate and are intended for vaginal use.
Vaginal suppositories are used to maintain and restore the natural pH value in the vagina:
- in adult women;
- during pregnancy and lactation;
- in teenage girls after consulting a doctor.
In case of a tendency to vaginal infections, it can be used for a long time for preventive purposes.
Indications for use
Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid are used to maintain and restore the natural pH level in the vagina.
Maintaining or regulating the vaginal environment with lactic acid promotes the growth of beneficial vaginal bacteria (those that produce lactic acid), while at the same time reducing the possibility of the growth of harmful microorganisms in the vagina. Therefore, Lactofem vaginal suppositories with lactic acid can be used to prevent vaginal infections and as an additional means to the medical treatment of such infections.
The vaginal mucosa is covered with a multilayered squamous epithelium, the cells of which contain glycogen. Under the action of lactic acid bacteria of the vagina, glycogen is fermented to lactic acid. A sufficient amount of lactic acid in the vagina maintains an acidic environment with a pH of 3.8 to 4.5. This creates unfavorable conditions for the development and colonization of pathogenic microorganisms. Thus, an acidic vaginal environment helps prevent bacterial infections. The acidic vaginal environment can be disturbed under the influence of various external factors, as a result of which the pH value becomes higher than 4.5.
Possible influencing factors include body secretions such as menstrual blood or semen, a decrease in the number of lactobacilli due to the use of antibiotics, and hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, lactation, or the use of female sex hormone preparations. Such circumstances promote the growth of unwanted pathogenic microorganisms in the vagina. These microorganisms can originate from the area around the entrance to the vagina (e.g. from the anal area) and enter the vagina or, for example, be transferred during sexual intercourse. As a result, a vaginal infection can occur.
In women who are prone to recurrent vaginal infections, the use of lactic acid vaginally often helps maintain self-regulation of pH values.
Application features
Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid are very well tolerated. There is no need to take any special precautions when using them. However, if you know that you are hypersensitive to at least one of the components of vaginal suppositories, you are not recommended to use them.
Adolescent girls can use Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid only after consulting a doctor, as there is currently insufficient experience to make general recommendations for use in children and adolescents.
Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid should not be used during menstrual bleeding. Skip treatment on these days.
If you suffer from a vaginal infection (e.g. excessive discharge, foul-smelling discharge, itching and burning sensation in the vaginal opening), you should consult your doctor before using Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid to clarify your symptoms and choose the appropriate treatment. It may also be necessary to prescribe medication or additional treatment for your partner.
If vaginal problems worsen while using Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid or do not improve within 8 days, you should stop using this medical product and consult a doctor.
Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid do not contain any active substance that inactivates sperm and therefore do not protect against unwanted pregnancy. Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid are for topical use only. Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid should not be used simultaneously with other vaginal preparations, such as other vaginal suppositories or creams, to avoid their interaction. There is no information on whether and to what extent vaginal suppositories can affect the effectiveness of vaginal contraceptives. Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid and condoms should not be used simultaneously so that the suppositories can work effectively. In addition, the resistance of the condom to tearing may decrease, which will impair its reliability. If the foil strip is damaged or the quality of the suppositories changes, do not use such a medical device and inform its manufacturer.
Pregnancy and lactation
Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid can also be used during pregnancy and lactation.
To remove the vaginal suppository, separate the foil strips at the tip of the suppository as shown in the following picture.
If the vagina is relatively dry, the suppository can be moistened under running water for easier insertion.
The usual duration of use is 5-7 days. To regularly maintain a normal vaginal pH, for example in women prone to vaginal infections, Lactofem vaginal suppositories with lactic acid can be used two to three times a week, even for a long period of time. If symptoms persist or recur, consult a doctor.

Side effect

Composition
Lactofem Vaginal Suppositories with Lactic Acid contain (S)-lactic acid, sodium-(S)-lactate solution, macrogol 1500 and macrogol 6000.
Candles do not contain paraffin, petroleum jelly or other fats.
Storage conditions
Keep out of reach of children.
Store at temperatures not lower than 1C and not higher than 30C.
