It consists of a manometer that measures air pressure; a cuff that is worn on the patient's shoulder; an air pump with an adjustable release valve and a stethoscope. Blood pressure is determined by a person using the Korotkoff sound method using a stethoscope. During the smooth deflation of the cuff, pulsation sounds called Korotkoff tones appear and then disappear in the area of the clamped artery. The manometer reading at the moment the tones appear means the level of systolic blood pressure, the reading at the moment the tones disappear means the level of diastolic blood pressure.
