Properties
Melatonin is a biogenic amine, one of the neurohormones synthesized in pinealocytes of the pineal gland and in some peripheral tissues. Its synthesis occurs at night without light.
Melatonin forms the circadian rhythm of sleep, reaching its maximum after midnight, helps normalize sleep, adapt the body to changing time zones, slows down the aging process of the body due to its antioxidant properties, and helps the body fight stress and seasonal depression.
Melatonin in the human body is naturally produced by the body and comes with some foods. It is found in its pure form in corn, bananas, tomatoes, rice, carrots, potatoes, fish, figs, parsley, oatmeal, nuts, barley, and raisins.
With age, melatonin production decreases, which leads to sleep disturbances: night awakenings, sleep becomes unstable, insomnia appears. It is important to remember that melatonin does not accumulate in the body - it is impossible to sleep for several days in advance or to stock up on melatonin.
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) belongs to the water-soluble B vitamins and is necessary for the body to perform many important functions: it plays an important role in metabolism; it is necessary for the normal functioning of the central and peripheral nervous systems, and is involved in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA).
Pyridoxine ensures proper hemoglobin synthesis and uniform supply of glucose to cells (Artyushkin S.A., 2017), helps increase intracellular magnesium reserves, participates in histamine metabolism, stimulates the detoxification properties of the liver, and reduces the concentration of cholesterol and cholesterol. A., 2010).
There is practically no pyridoxine depot in the human body, so the complete exclusion of vitamin B6 from the diet leads to manifestations of avitaminosis after 5-7 days (Dadak K., 2013).
Suppliers of vitamin B6 are fish or meat: beef liver and cod liver, heart, kidneys, oysters; whole grains or vegetables: cabbage, carrots, field mustard, soybeans, potatoes.
Beans and bananas are especially rich in vitamin B6.
