L-Carnitine is a vitamin-like substance that is synthesized in the liver and kidneys from lysine and methionine. L-Carnitine plays a vital role in energy metabolism, transporting fatty acids into cells. Once in the mitochondria, fat is burned, and the body receives the necessary energy. In addition, L-Carnitine is an antioxidant and can improve hormonal balance. Treatment with L-Carnitine improves sperm motility and viability in patients with idiopathic infertility who have previously been treated with antibiotics. It has also been shown that L-Carnitine therapy increases the overall ability of seminal fluid to get rid of oxidative radicals and improves sperm parameters. Adding L-Carnitine to sperm samples intended for cryopreservation can significantly improve sperm quality.
