Lutein and zeaxanthin are naturally found in the center of the eye. High levels of these carotenoids are found in the “macula,” the part of the eye responsible for central vision and the highest visual acuity. Together, lutein and zeaxanthin form the so-called macular pigment. They perform two important functions. First, they act as a blue light filter - similar to internal sunglasses - protecting the eyes from the harmful effects of the blue part of the light spectrum. Second, they are powerful antioxidants.
