Properties

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a completely natural product, the molecules of which exist deep inside every cell of our body. It enhances the positive effects of antioxidants (vitamins C and E). It also protects these vitamins in the body and helps them suppress free radicals. Alpha-lipoic acid is soluble in both water and fat, so it is a universal antioxidant.

Unlike vitamins C and E, it is able to fight free radicals in any part of the cell and even penetrate the intercellular space and protect DNA. Alpha-lipoic acid is able to increase cellular metabolism, which means that the cell begins to produce more energy and is renewed more easily.

Alpha-lipoic acid is an effective anti-inflammatory agent. All these properties of alpha-lipoic acid extend not only to the internal organs of the body, but also to the skin. Inflammation of the skin is a direct path to the appearance of fine wrinkles. Alpha-lipoic acid inhibits cytokines that cause inflammation, substances that damage cells and accelerate the aging process.

Alpha-lipoic acid improves the metabolism of sugar in the cell and prevents it from accumulating in the blood. Sugar is necessary for our body to live, but its excess has a toxic effect on the cells. Inhibition of the activity of intestinal enzymes (alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase) delays the absorption of glucose into the blood and prevents postprandial hyperglycemia, which in turn improves glycemic control.

In the intestine during food digestion, all of these compounds inhibit alpha-glucosidase activity (i.e., reduce the formation of simple carbohydrates) and may also interfere with the absorption of simple carbohydrates from food. Mangiferin is the most potent inhibitor of sucrose. Mangiferin has also been found to have immunoprotective, cardioprotective, antioxidant, and cardiotonic activities.
