Release form
The drug Potassium Iodide is available in the form of round tablets, 10 pieces per blister.
Pharmacological properties
The active substance potassium iodide is a valuable and indispensable trace element, which is necessary for the health and full functioning of the thyroid gland. When iodides enter the cells of the thyroid gland epithelium, the ions are gradually oxidized to form elemental iodine, which is incorporated into the tyrosine molecule.
As a result of complex chemical reactions, thyronines are formed, the most important of which are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyronines form a complex with the protein thyroglobulin, which is deposited and accumulates in the colloid of the thyroid follicle.
Potassium iodide, when taken orally in physiological amounts, prevents the development of endemic goiter (associated with a lack of iodine in food); normalizes the size of the thyroid gland, and also affects the concentration of thyroid-stimulating hormone.
When taken orally in the form of tablets, it is almost completely absorbed in the intestinal tract, and within 2 hours it accumulates in the intracellular space. It accumulates mainly in the thyroid gland, salivary and mammary glands, and the gastric mucosa.
Easily crosses the placenta.
