Pharmacological properties
Prospan is a herbal medicine containing the active ingredient - dry ivy leaf extract, the therapeutic effect of which in inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract is based on the secretolytic, mucolytic and antispasmodic effects of glycoside saponins contained in the leaves of this plant. Prospan reduces the viscosity of sputum, facilitates its discharge.
In clinical studies, the bronchodilator effect of the drug was noted. Experiments on animals demonstrated the antispasmodic effect of the drug. It is assumed that the secretolytic effect is caused by irritation of the gastric mucosa by reflex stimulation of the bronchial mucous glands through sensory parasympatholytic fibers.
Immunohistochemical and biophysical studies in vitro demonstrated suppression of β 2 -receptor uptake by α-hederin - even under conditions of strong stimulation - in alveolar epithelial type II cells.
Indication
Symptomatic treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases of the bronchi; acute inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract accompanied by cough.
Application
Prospan forte effervescent tablets for cough. Adults and children over 12 years of age are prescribed 1 effervescent tablet (65 mg of dry ivy leaf extract) 2 times a day, children aged 6-12 years - ½ effervescent tablet (32.5 mg of dry ivy leaf extract) 3 times a day. Tablets can be broken in half.
Take the tablets in the morning (afternoon) and in the evening, having previously dissolved them in a glass of water (about 100-200 ml). You can use both hot and cold water to dissolve the tablets.
The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor in each specific case, taking into account the nature and severity of the disease.
Children: The drug is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.
Prospan cough syrup. In infants and children aged 1 to 6 years, the drug is administered orally 2.5 ml 3 times a day, in children 6-10 years - 5 ml 3 times a day, in adults and children over 10 years - 5-7.5 ml 3 times a day using the enclosed measuring cup. The syrup should be used in the morning, afternoon and evening.
The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually. In mild cases, the duration of treatment is 1 week. To achieve a stable therapeutic effect, it is recommended to continue therapy for another 2-3 days after the patient's condition improves.
Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use!
If the patient's condition does not improve, you should consult a doctor about further treatment.
Children. The drug is used in pediatric practice.
Prospan cough solution. Adults and children over 12 years of age are prescribed 1 joint (5 ml) 3 times a day, which corresponds to 105 mg of dry ivy leaf extract, children 6-11 years old - 1 joint (5 ml) 2 times a day, which corresponds to 70 mg of dry ivy leaf extract.
The joint should be slightly kneaded before use.
The solution must be taken undiluted in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening.

Children. In this dosage form, the drug can be used in children aged 6 years and older.
Prospan cough drops. Adults and children over 10 years old are prescribed 24 drops 3 times a day; children aged 4-10 years - 16 drops 3 times a day; children aged 1 to 4 years - 12 drops 3 times a day.
The drops should be used before meals. Children are recommended to give the drops with a small amount of fruit juice.
The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually. Usually the course of treatment is 7 days. To achieve a stable therapeutic effect, it is recommended to continue treatment with the drug for another 2-3 days after the symptoms of the disease disappear. If the symptoms of the disease do not disappear or, on the contrary, the condition worsens, you should consult a doctor.
Children: The drug is not recommended for use in children under 1 year of age.
Prospan lozenges for cough. Adults and children over 12 years old should take 1 tablet 4 times a day, dissolving in the mouth (104 mg of dry ivy leaf extract per day), children aged 6-12 years - 1 tablet (52 mg of dry ivy leaf extract) 2 times a day.
The duration of treatment depends on the nature and severity of the symptoms of the disease and is usually 1 week, even in the case of mild inflammation of the respiratory tract.
To achieve a lasting therapeutic effect, it is recommended to continue treatment for another 2-3 days after the patient's condition improves.
Children: The drug is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age.
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the drug.
Prospan cough syrup: fructose intolerance.
Prospan cough drops: alcoholism and other conditions in which alcohol consumption is contraindicated.
Side effects
Very rarely (1/10,000) a laxative effect may occur (due to the sorbitol content). Very rarely (1/10,000) allergic reactions are possible.
Gastrointestinal disorders may occur in patients with hypersensitivity.
If any adverse reactions occur, treatment should be discontinued and a doctor should be consulted.
If symptoms of the disease persist for a long time, as well as if shortness of breath, fever, and purulent or bloody sputum appear, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Prospan Forte effervescent cough tablets. Each effervescent tablet contains 6.58 mmol (or 151.33 mg) of sodium. This should be taken into account when using the drug in patients on a diet with sodium restriction (low sodium / low salt). The flavoring included in the tablets contains lactose (29.7 mg in 1 effervescent tablet). Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency and glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this drug. In case of fructose intolerance, treatment should be carried out only after consulting a doctor.
1 effervescent tablet contains 0.04 XE, which should be taken into account by diabetics.
Prospan cough solution. The drug contains sorbitol. If used according to the instructions, the patient will receive up to 1.9 g of sorbitol with each dose. There is a risk for patients with congenital fructose intolerance. In this case, treatment should be carried out only after consulting a doctor.
Do not exceed the recommended daily dose of the drug.
Prospan cough drops: the drug contains 47% alcohol by volume. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose.
Prospan cough lozenges: Patients with rare hereditary fructose intolerance should not take this medicine. 1 tablet contains 0.53 g of maltitol and 0.53 g of sorbitol, which is equivalent to about 0.09 XE, which should be taken into account by diabetics.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is no experience of using the drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Therefore, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, the drug should be used only after a careful assessment by a doctor of the benefit to the mother / risk to the fetus (child).
The ability to influence the reaction speed when driving vehicles or other mechanisms. Does not affect.
Interactions
Interaction studies have not been conducted.
No side effects have been observed when Prospan cough syrup is used simultaneously with other medications. Therefore, the drug can be used together with other medications, such as antibiotics.
Overdose
When taking the drug in large quantities (more than 3 times the daily dose), nausea, vomiting or diarrhea may occur. In this case, you should immediately consult a doctor. Treatment is symptomatic.
Storage conditions
At a temperature not exceeding 25 °C.
Prospan Forte effervescent cough tablets. After taking the tablets, the tube should be tightly closed again.
Prospan cough syrup. During storage, slight clouding and a slight change in the taste of the syrup may occur, this does not affect the therapeutic properties of the drug.
Prospan cough lozenges: should be stored in a place protected from moisture.
