Composition

Main physical and chemical properties: pieces of leaves of various shapes that pass through a sieve with holes with a diameter of 7 mm. The color is grayish-green or brownish-green. The taste is slightly bitter with a feeling of slipperiness, the smell is weak and characteristic (for packs of 100 g or 50 g).

Pharmacological properties
The biologically active substances of the drug have a laxative effect, which manifests itself 6-10 hours after ingestion and is caused by anthraglycosides, which enhance peristalsis of the large intestine.
Indication
Atony of the large intestine, chronic constipation.
Contraindication
Hypersensitivity to the biologically active substances of the drug. Metrorrhagia, paralytic intestinal obstruction, hemorrhoids, acute inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, appendicitis), peritonitis, peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, gastrointestinal bleeding, rectal fissures, spastic colitis, strangulated hernia, pancreatitis, hepatitis, nephritis, cystitis, abdominal pain of unknown genesis, severe disorders of water and electrolyte balance, nausea, vomiting, diverticulitis, organic liver lesions.
Interaction with other medicinal products and other types of interactions
Simultaneous use with quinidine sulfate reduces the level of active substances in the blood serum, with cardiac glycosides causes cardiac arrhythmia, with antiarrhythmics, diuretics and corticosteroids causes muscle weakness.
Application features
Before starting the drug, it is necessary for the doctor to establish the cause of constipation to exclude intestinal obstruction. The drug is recommended to be used only if normalization of bowel movements cannot be achieved by changing the diet or using drugs that increase the volume of intestinal contents. To avoid addiction, it is advisable to alternate the drug with other laxatives and limit the duration of use to 1 week.

Method of administration and doses
Whole raw materials: Place 1.5-2 teaspoons of leaves in an enameled dish, pour 200 ml of hot boiled water, cover with a lid and infuse in a boiling water bath for 30 minutes. Keep at room temperature until completely cooled, strain, squeeze the residue to obtain a decoction. Bring the volume of the decoction to 200 ml with boiled water. Adults take 1/3-½ cup at night or 1 tablespoon 1-3 times a day warm. Children over 12 years old - from 1-2 tablespoons to ¼ cup at night.
Powder: 2 filter bags are placed in a glass or enameled dish, poured with 200 ml (1 cup) of boiling water, covered and left for 30 minutes. Adults should take 1/3-½ cup warm at night or 1 tablespoon 1-3 times a day. Children over 12 years old - from 1-2 tablespoons to ¼ cup at night.

Overdose
Overdose may cause intestinal colic, dyspepsia, diarrhea, and disturbances in water-salt balance, which requires discontinuation of the drug.
Treatment: symptomatic therapy. Prolonged (up to several years) use of large doses of the drug can cause atrophy of the smooth muscles of the colon and disruption of its innervation.

Allergic reactions (including rash, itching, urticaria, local or generalized exanthema). Digestive disorders, colicky pain in the intestines, flatulence, diarrhea, anorexia, urine discoloration, intestinal pseudomelanosis, water and electrolyte imbalance (hypokalemia, hypocalcemia), albuminuria, hematuria, hyperaldosteronism, cardiac disorders, increased fatigue, muscle weakness, convulsions. Long-term (up to several years) use of large doses of senna leaf decoction can cause atrophy of the smooth muscles of the colon and disruption of its innervation.
