Surgicel Sterile Hemostatic Material is a glucose copolymer compound derived from enriched cellulose by oxidation and has a pH of pH 2.8, which is slightly acidic.

Due to its low pH, Surgicel changes the structure of albumin and globulin in the blood, which promotes hemostasis. Glucose copolymers, in turn, undergo hydrolysis and are completely absorbed after 7-14 days.

Indications for use

Surgicel is an absorbable hemostatic material used in surgical practice as an adjunct to stop capillary, venous, and small arterial bleeding. It is used in cases where ligature application and other traditional hemostasis methods are ineffective or unsafe.

Method of application

Surgicel should be used in the amount necessary to achieve hemostasis. Avoid overapplication (the material can be cut with sterile scissors for this purpose). The material should be applied under pressure directly to the bleeding surface. The amount of material and the time of pressure are determined by the type and severity of bleeding. The material is resorbable after implantation, so it can be left in the wound for surgical wound closure (except for contraindications). The material is not subject to resterilization.

Contraindications and precautions

Surgicel should be used only in the amount necessary to achieve hemostasis. Remove excess hemostatic to accelerate the resorption process and minimize possible foreign body reaction.

In urological practice, Surgicel is used with great caution and in minimal amounts to avoid blockage of the urethra, ureter or catheter with particles of the material. It is not recommended to use Surgicel in purulent wounds. If such use is necessary, the material should be removed immediately after hemostasis is achieved.

In fractures and laminectomy, Surgicel should be removed from the surgical field after bleeding has stopped. Surgicel is not recommended for use in the presence of serous discharge from the wound, as body fluids other than blood do not react with oxidized cellulose and hemostasis does not occur.
