Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics
2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol are antiseptics and have antibacterial (bactericidal and bacteriostatic), antifungal and antiviral properties, which have been demonstrated in vitro. When both active substances are combined in one medicinal product, a synergistic antibacterial effect is observed, which allows to reduce the dosage required for the combination. In vitro studies have demonstrated antibacterial activity of the drug against certain microorganisms that cause sore throat, such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenza and Moraxella catarrhalis, after 1 minute of contact. An overall reduction in the bacterial load in the oral cavity was also observed in one in vivo study. In vitro studies have also shown antiviral activity of amylmetacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, as well as combinations of these two substances, against enveloped viruses, including influenza A virus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, cytomegalovirus, and coronavirus, after 1-2 minutes of contact.
Clinical trial data show that Strepsils Honey and Lemon lozenges relieve sore throat, reduce soreness and difficulty swallowing, with an onset of action of 5 minutes and a duration of action of up to 2 hours. Significantly greater relief compared to the use of lozenges without active ingredients was also demonstrated with treatment for up to 3 days. One study also showed that Strepsils Honey and Lemon lozenges significantly reduced post-operative sore throat and hoarseness 20 minutes and 24 hours after intubation. A study in children (aged 6-16 years) with acute and recurrent chronic sore throat demonstrated a reduction in subjective and objective signs of sore throat after 3 days of treatment with Strepsils Honey and Lemon lozenges.
Strepsils Honey and Lemon Lozenges contain lemon oil, peppermint oil, and honey, the drug has a softening effect that soothes a sore throat.
