Each Streptocide tablet contains 0.5 g of sulfanilamidum (sulfanilamide).

Auxiliary components include:

  • potato starch;
  • talc;
  • stearic acid.

Release form

Streptocide is presented in a blister containing 10 tablets, without the use of cardboard packaging. The tablets are white in color with a flat surface, a score and a bevel.

Streptocide is presented in a blister containing 10 tablets.

Pharmacological properties

According to the pharmacological group, Streptocide belongs to antibacterial drugs for systemic use.

Streptocide disrupts the formation of so-called "sprouting factors" in microorganisms, such as folic and dihydrofolic acids, as well as other compounds that contain para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in their molecule.

Due to the structural similarity between PABA and sulfonamide, which is the main component of Streptocide, the latter competes with the acid in the metabolic chain of microorganisms, disrupting metabolic processes in it and providing a bacteriostatic effect.

Streptocide, which is a short-acting sulfonamide, has a bacteriostatic effect on streptococci, meningococci, pneumococci, gonococci, Escherichia coli, as well as pathogens of toxoplasmosis and malaria. It has no effect on anaerobic microorganisms.

Indication

Streptocide is recommended for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to it, such as infections of the skin and mucous membranes (including wounds, ulcers and bedsores), enterocolitis, pyelitis and cystitis.

Contraindication

Contraindications to taking Streptocide include:

  • individual sensitivity to the components of the drug;
  • history of severe toxic-allergic reactions to sulfonamides;
  • suppression of hematopoiesis in the bone marrow;
  • uncompensated heart failure;
  • diseases of the hematopoietic system, anemia or leukopenia;
  • Graves' disease;
  • kidney and liver pathologies;
  • hyperthyroidism;
  • congenital deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase;
  • azotemia;
  • porphyria;

Application

Recommendations for use:

  • Streptocide tablets should be taken orally during or after meals, with a glass of water.
  • For adults and children over 12 years of age, a single dose is 0.6–1.2 g, and a daily dose is 3–6 g, which should be divided into 5 doses. Maximum doses of Streptocide for adults: single - 2 g, daily - 7 g.
  • For children from 3 to 6 years old, a single dose is 0.3 g, from 6 to 12 years old - 0.3–0.6 g. The frequency of administration for children is 4–6 times a day.
  • The maximum daily dose of Streptocide for children is 0.9–2.4 g.

The duration of treatment is determined by the doctor individually, taking into account the severity and nature of the disease, the location of its development, and the effectiveness of the therapy used.

Children.

Streptocide is not used in children under three years of age.

Special instructions

During treatment with the drug, it is important to regularly monitor kidney function, blood counts, and glucose levels. With prolonged use, periodic blood tests are required.

The use of Streptocide in insufficient doses or premature discontinuation may contribute to the development of resistance in microorganisms. Sulfonamides are not recommended for the treatment of infections caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus, as this will not prevent complications.

Sulfonamides are not recommended for the treatment of infections caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus.

The drug should be prescribed with caution in heart failure, liver and kidney diseases, as well as in patients with allergic diseases or bronchial asthma. If there are signs of hypersensitivity, the tablets should be discontinued.

Sulfonamides, including streptocide, should be used with caution in patients with diabetes because of the possible effect on blood sugar levels. High doses may cause hypoglycemia.

It is recommended to avoid sunlight due to the risk of photosensitization. It is important to adhere to the dosage regimen and not to double the missed dose. If the treatment is ineffective or side effects occur, you should consult a doctor.

Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

The product is contraindicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If use of the drug is necessary, breastfeeding should be discontinued.

The possibility of influencing the reaction speed when driving vehicles or other mechanisms.

Until the individual reaction to the drug is determined, it is not recommended to drive or operate machinery due to possible side effects such as dizziness, seizures, ataxia, drowsiness, depression, or psychosis.

Side effects

Adverse reactions may manifest themselves in the form of the following disorders:

  • leukopenia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia;
  • tachycardia, myocarditis;
  • headaches;
  • neurological reactions, including aseptic meningitis;
  • pulmonary infiltrates;
  • thirst, dry mouth;
  • dyspeptic phenomena;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • diarrhea;
  • increased activity of liver enzymes;
  • change in urine color;
  • skin hyperemia, rash;
  • allergic reactions;

Overdose

This may manifest as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, colicky pain, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, and fainting.

With prolonged use of Streptocide, fever, hematuria, crystalluria, cyanosis, tachycardia, paresthesias, diarrhea, cholestasis, renal failure with anuria, toxic hepatitis, leukopenia, and agranulocytosis may occur.

Interaction

Streptocide is not recommended to be taken simultaneously with hexamethylenetetramine (urotropine), antidiabetic drugs (sulfonylurea derivatives), diphenin, neodicoumarin and other indirect anticoagulants.

The use of Streptocide may enhance the effect and/or toxicity of methotrexate due to competitive binding to proteins or a decrease in its metabolism.

When combined with other drugs that can suppress bone marrow, cause hemolysis or hepatotoxicity, toxic effects may occur.

The simultaneous use of Streptocide with methenamine (urotropine) is not recommended due to the increased risk of crystalluria with an acidic urine reaction.

Phenylbutazone (butadione), salicylates, and indomethacin may increase the concentration of sulfonamides in the blood.

Parallel use with para-aminosalicylic acid and barbiturates may enhance the activity of sulfonamides. With chloramphenicol, the risk of agranulocytosis may increase. With drugs containing para-aminobenzoic acid esters (novocaine, anestezin, dicaine), a partial loss of the antibacterial activity of Streptocide may occur.

When used simultaneously with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, sulfonylurea derivatives, antithrombotic agents and vitamin K antagonists, their action is enhanced. However, when combined with folic acid and bactericidal antibiotics (including penicillins and cephalosporins), the effectiveness of Streptocide is reduced.

Storage conditions

Streptocide should be stored at temperatures up to 25 °C.
