Prolene is a monofilament, synthetic, sterile, non-absorbable surgical suture material made from an isotactic crystalline stereoisomer of polypropylene, a synthetic linear polyolefin. Prolene is intended for approximation and/or ligation of soft tissues, including use in cardiovascular surgery, ophthalmic surgery, and neurosurgery.

Properties: non-absorbable - provides permanent tensile strength in tissues even in the presence of infection; exceptionally smooth - easy passage through tissues; monofilament - smooth surface does not promote bacterial growth; synthetic thread - minimal tissue reaction; ductile - easy knotting; color - blue or white; thread thickness - varies from 10/0 to 1 (USP), supplied as threads with a needle; sterilization - ethylene oxide; as with other synthetic suture materials, knot reliability requires the use of standard flat and square knot tying techniques with additional thread overlap. Prolene causes a minimal initial inflammatory reaction in the tissues with subsequent encapsulation of the suture material by connective tissue. The thread is non-absorbable and is not subject to degradation or weakening by enzymes in the tissues. Due to its relative biological inertness, it is recommended for use in areas where the least possible tissue reaction is desired. As a monofilament material, it has been successfully used in surgical wounds where there is a risk of subsequent infection or contamination, as its use helps to minimize the formation of a ligature fistula or rejection of the suture material. Prolene suture material does not fuse with the surrounding tissues and is easily removed by simply pulling the suture material. Caution: Careful handling is required to avoid damaging the surface of the material with surgical instruments.
