Vicryl is a purple or uncoated braided suture made of polyglactide 910, coated with polyglactin 370 and calcium stearate. The suture is hydrolyzed, so tissue reaction is minimal. The sutures are coated to minimize tissue trauma and facilitate knot tying.

Application area

Compression and/or ligation of soft tissues in all areas of surgery, ophthalmology, gynecology and gastroenterology. Not suitable for cardiovascular and neurosurgery.

Vikril suture is a synthetic, absorbable, sterile suture made from a copolymer consisting of 90% glycolide and 10% L-lactide. The empirical formula of the copolymer is (C2H2O2)m(C3H4O2)n.

Vicryl is coated with a mixture consisting of equal parts of a glycolide-lactide copolymer (Polyglactin 370) and calcium stearate. The copolymer Polyglactin 910, Polyglactin 370 and calcium stearate are known to be non-antigenic, non-pyrogenic and to cause little tissue reaction upon resorption.
Vicryl is dyed purple and is also available in undyed form. Vicryl is available in various thicknesses and lengths and can be supplied separately (ligatures) or together with stainless steel needles of various types and sizes (atraumatic).

Indications for use

Vicryl suture is suitable for soft tissue approximation, including use in ophthalmic surgery, peripheral nerve anastomosis, and microsurgery on vessels less than 2 mm in diameter. The safety and effectiveness of VICRIL suture in cardiac surgery have not been established.

Instructions for use

The selection and placement of sutures should be based on the following factors: patient condition, surgeon experience, surgical technique, and wound size.

Contraindication

Because these sutures are absorbable, they should not be used in cases where prolonged tissue tension is required.

Warnings and precautions

As with all foreign bodies, prolonged contact of any suture with saline (e.g., in the urinary or biliary tract) may result in the formation of calculi. Sutures left on the skin for more than 7 days may cause local irritation. They should be removed according to instructions. Absorbable sutures should be used with caution in tissues with poor blood supply, as rejection of the suture and delayed resorption may occur. Subcutaneous sutures should be placed as deeply as possible to reduce the erythema and induration that are usually associated with the resorption process. This suture is not recommended for use in elderly, debilitated, or debilitated patients, or in the presence of conditions that interfere with wound healing.

Adverse reactions

Adverse reactions associated with the use of this material include local temporary irritation at the wound site, temporary inflammatory reaction to the foreign body, redness, swelling, and induration during absorption of intradermal sutures. As with any foreign body, Vicryl may aggravate an existing infection.
