Properties

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) – eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) – are essential fatty acids.

Omega-3 PUFAs have cardioprotective properties. The positive effect on blood plasma lipids is realized through the normalization of the blood lipid spectrum, which occurs due to a decrease in the synthesis of triglycerides in the liver, since EPA and DHA inhibit the esterification of other fatty acids, as well as due to a decrease in the amount of free fatty acids (the number of peroxisomes β-oxidation of fatty acids increases), which are involved in the synthesis of triglycerides. A decrease in the synthesis of triglycerides leads to a decrease in the level of very low density lipoproteins. Omega-3 PUFAs also affect hemostasis by inhibiting thromboxane A2, which reduces the aggregation ability of platelets, reducing the risk of thrombosis. Due to the stabilization of cardiomyocyte membranes, Omega-3 PUFAs have an antiarrhythmic effect. Omega-3 PUFAs also have an anti-inflammatory effect associated with the inhibition of the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) is an antioxidant, prevents the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids, participates in tissue respiration, and protects cells and tissues from the harmful effects of excessive amounts of free radicals and peroxide products.

It can be recommended as an additional source of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, and vitamin E.
